Found borer holes, now what?

Damn opportunistic pests! I was so busy this summer I didn't take the time to inspect most my plants.

My buckeye got hit pretty bad and my sugar maple has some as well. The bark on the buckeye has flaked away and appears to be healing but not much I can do eitherway.

I've read that if they are from this year the best thing to do (if its feasible) is to fish a wire into the hole to pierce the larvae.

Any other tips?

All the borer holes are within two feet off the ground, mostly 6" above ground.

Thanks!

That's probable about it. You MIGHT use something like Bayer Tree snd Shrub as a protective fox nest season. Our Fall Fiesta got hit pretty hard with Maple Tip Borer a couple years ago. So used the Bayer for one year, and they were much better after that. I know it's not the same borer, just saying that there isn't ALLOT you can do but preventative to try to stop reinfestation. Once the trees get past transplant stress, they probable won't have major problems.

One last thing comes to mind. IF you think you are going to lose a tree, you might try something un-orthodox. Something volatile in the borer hole. I have considered, but not tried
putting a few drops of isopropol alcohol into the holes. It is VERY penetrating into gas spaces, and into the surface of the wood (use to use it in a lab as a "wetting agent"). I know for a fact that is is VERY good at killing insects, as I have knocked flies out of the air in mid-flight with it, and a few other "experiments" with it.

Seems like I've had a lot of borer problems and pests in the last few years. It's always in recent transplants undergoing transplant stress. It's got to the point where I've started using CoreTect Imidacloprid Tablets upon planting. I know a lot of people object to pesticide prophylaxis, but I have too many trees to inspect as often as required. I havn't had any issues with new borers and have stopped nasty infestations of pine tip moth by using the product. I only use it for 1-2 years. It requires one application per year. As for the existing borers, I've sprayed pesticides through tiny straws and inserted small wires into the holes as you mentioned. Good Luck!

I thought borers was a death sentence for a tree. I cut down a beautiful Sycamore because of borers. Don't tell me I could've saved the tree instead.

poaky,
Depends allot on how bad they are. A couple to few while small will be encapsulated, and really have little effect on a large mature tree. Trees cut for lumber or otherwise frequently show past borer infestation that the tree overcame. In fact, so of the most beautiful wood is full of borer tracks that the tree overcame.

abciximab,
Seen lots of problems the last 2-3 years that I have not shown before. I'm sure it's the horrible summers we have had the last 2-3 years.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll likely try the Bayer systemic on the trees already effected in spring.

It looks as if these these where effected last year and the borers came out this year. The bark is just coming off now but has already healed in areas. I should post pics...

I'll definitely have to be more deligent with inspecting these trunks in mid-summer each year.

Arktrees, I thought once they are in there they will keep munching and weaken the tree. Mine had wet wood too, so my situation is different anyway.

They bore in and then munch their way out.

Them dirty munchers. My Sycamore was getting impressive and casting some serious shade before they came along.

I've had borers in my weeping white birch for several years. Each fall, a tree company comes out and gives it a Merit injection to help reduce borer damage.
