Sorry, should have posted this in my prior e-mail. How is the growth rate of this tree as compared to the Thuja Green Giant? Thanks. |

From Googling, it looks as though the T. 'GG' is much taller and faster growing, to 60', comparing closely to Leylands. The T. occidentalis Nigra 'Dark Green' (a selection of T. o. 'Nigra') maxes out at about 30'. The descriptions said slow growing, and a loose growth habit; branches can be vulnerable to breaking. I have no personal experience with either - I do have a T. o. 'Nigra', which would probably be happier if I could water it more, but it's hanging in there, if slowly, and looks to make its vaunted 20-30' in its own time - it's now about 8' from a 1 gal. pot at 18", after 6 years. As I said, if I were able to have watered it well over the years, what with the drought(s) and lack of rainfall, it probably would be a couple of feet taller. I guess it depends on what you want - if a hedge effect, then the T. 'GG' seems your better bet, as long as you want the height. If you want hedge, but shorter, then T. occidentalis 'Emerald Green' might suit - it's supposed to grow to 10-15' x 3-5', and has a nice tight growth habit.

Emerald green is a nicer looking plant. better color and very dense. It doesn't get as big though. Nice aroma. I would say it's slower. Mine grow about a foot a year like dibbit's.

Thuja occidentalis 'Nigra' won't be as fast. T.'Green Giant' is part T. plicata, the more vigorous, larger-growing western counterpart to T. occidentalis.

C, if you're shearing them hedge-style, just do the same treatment with the uppermost portions of the plant. IOWs, don't top them, just shear them all around. Nigra is probably my least favorite arb cultivar. But that's beside the point. You've got these and may as well work with them. Or am I mis-reading? +oM
