| Hi,
Would anyone shed light with me what NATIVE deciduous trees with sturdy strong limbs and deep roots are good to shade houses in summers in Georgia. We have a lot of sweet gums in our areas, but they are so fragile. Their limbs always break when there is wind.. Thanks |

| Liriodendron Tulipifera? If you have the space. |
| Tuliptree, Liriodendron tulipifera is a great fast-growing shade tree. It does shed a few small limbs, but nothing to big enough to damage anything. Another choice might be one of the faster growing oaks: Scarlet oak is Quercus coccinea and pin oak is Quercus palustris. Red maple (Acer rubrum 'October Glory') is fast, but it has a lot of surface roots so it is harder to garden under. This a good time to research - Trees Atlanta is having a sale this Saturday. See link below. They will have some trees that you can't usually find in nurseries. They will have mostly natives and some non-natives. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Tree Sale this saturday, Oct 8th

| Chestnut Oak, Shumard oak, Nuttals oak, Willow oak, Cherrybark oak Durands oak. I'm assuming you have good drainage in the yard. |
| White Oak if you have well-drained soil. Considered the premier oak tree by most. Red fall leaf color. Willow Oak is a good tree even if your drainage is not so good. Its also one of the fastest growing of the oak species and one of the cleanest. Muted yellow fall leaf color. Southern Red Oak is another possibility for well-drained area. Pecan is another thought but they do tend to drip litter, however they make up for that with pecans. Yellow fall leaf color that falls quickly. |
| Bald cypress and live oak if you have the room. |
| I would have said Live oak but they wanted deciduous trees. I would have one if they'd grow here, sigh..... |
