| I am new to the gardening world. My neighbor has a tree that is close to our property line that has big sized leaves ( 6 to 9 inche) long. I wondering any guess what of three this might be. I think it drop the round green tennis sized "fuit" The fruit is soft on the outside and has a hard net core. I have hundreds opf these in my yard most of which are starting to rot ( black in color)
Any idea what this tree is |

| Photos??? Worth a thousand words..... You could try using a thousand words too? What shape are the leaves? Are they simple, compound, or double-compound leaves (look it up on Google)? |

| If the "fruit" is large green with a bumby raised surface, ugly and inedible, maybe Osage orange? The wood is orange, ans "sinewy looking" with thorns on older trees. Look up the image for Osage orange |

| The fruit sounds like hedge apples. We had them in Kansas when I was growing up. I don't know much about them, though. |

| I think the description of a round thing that is soft on the outside, has a hard nut ("net") in the middle and turns black, fits Black Walnut to a T. The green outside will turn black and dry up soon. The hard nut will be sought after by squirrels or will roll around under your feet for months. To rake them up from the areas you walk in, use a garden rake (as opposed to a leaf rake) upside down to corral them. Juglans nigra (Black Walnut) make nice shade trees, but the nuts are a pain. Some years (this year for us), they only make a few nuts (100s). Then there are the years when they make 1000s. |
