Please, what is this patio tree and why the yellowing edges?

Hi,
Any expert around who can help me identify this patio tree?
And why do a lot of leaves look sick and show yellowing edges?
As can be seen in the photos, this tree has a rather slim trunk but has very long branches that make it look spindly. It also has a lot of thorns on the branches.

The attached photo shows the tree partially blocked by a wild palm. Don't know how to attached more than 1 photo, I have uploaded 3 here :

Thanks much!

Looks like a citrus, reaching for the light, that might need some trace mineral (AlSO2 ?). Next spring, give it a shot of citrus fertilizer. The reaching for the light might be a harder thing to fix.

You mean it might be an orange or lemon tree? I am not seeing any flowers let alone fruits though...

Jb, I'm pretty sure of the citrus because of the way the leaf is rippled on the left of your pic. So typical. I think you can scratch lemon off your 'it might be' list. Your zone 9 climate is too cool for lemons without a lot of protection or a warm microclimate.
Many citrus make thorns, especially wild oranges and grapefruit types (doubt if it is a grapefruit, they are quite cold sensitive). A lot of seedling orange trees make thorns, you might have a Hamlin or something grown from seed. They (Hamlins) can take freezing temps without dying. Temps below about 24F will kill most citrus.

Citrus trees with a lot of shade often make few or no fruit. A lot of shade means less than about 4 hours of full sun.

Thanks, Dz.
I am in northern California, BTW. I know they grow citrus here, just haven't seen them up-close.
So you think fertilizer will fix the problem with the yellowing leaves? Is it an indication something is not right that the tree looks so spindly? I guess I am trying to imagine what a healthy one should look like. Maybe I will look up some images of citrus on the Internet...
