| Malus Guinzam, Guinevere Crab, dwarf form.
I was asked to cut the suckers and thought these might nice stand alone trees. Is it grafted? If it is, what kind of tree can I expect? They certainly seem very vigorous! |

| Are ye talking trunk suckers, arising from the base, or just random suckers up off of branches? If the former, and if the tree is grafted, which I don't know, then no, they'll be whatever the rootstock is. If the latter, and if you can root them somehow, then yes, they'll be that cultivar. +oM |

| These are well rooted suckers from the base. I was hopeing that someone was familiar with this cultivar and could tell me if it is grown on its own roots or not. What makes me think it is grafted is that the suckers are very vigorous. I am told the tree was planted a year ago so these are less than a year old. -- And yet the tallest one was three-quarters the size of the mother tree.

| In what sense then are the roots of these suckers distinct from the roots of the tree itself? I reckon you've got me a bit confused. All the basal suckers I see on crabs are stuck right tight around the main stem. OK, maybe not all, but most. If separated by a little distance, then one could sink a sharp shovel and cut them free, replant and see what you get. I don't know that any given crab cultivar is necessarily grafted or own-root. I think they are all grown both ways. Not sure about that though. I remember maybe ten/fifteen yrs. ago, own-root was all the rage. Supposed to yield sucker-free trees. Then I heard they still suckered. Wonder where that's at today. +oM |

| I will inspect the mother tree on Sunday to see if I can spot a bud union. Is the fact that it is a "dwarf" telling perhaps? In any event, I planted the suckers on the edge of my property. We will see what happens in the spring. :) |
