| He said we will have a "warm" mild winter like we had last year. He said there will be a lot of storms in the South, but our area will avoid all of that.
Buffalo saved a bundle last year from not having to plow snow, so i guess they will again this winter.

You're going to have a cold wet winter

His prediction is based on the weak El Nino the US is experiencing. He said the South better be prepared for some serious storms this winter, but we will have it easy. I hope he's right.

Yeap, he's taking El Nino as happening. As I posted last week, that is looking less and less likely. Could certainly still happen, but the equatorial waters that warm in El Nino, have been cooling for the last several weeks instead of warming as would be expected for a coming El Nino. Arktrees |

El nio winters may bring mild weather to western NYS, but bring crazy storms to Cali., the Gulf states and potentially the East coast as the storms ride up the coast. I have only seen extended forecasts through December and still calling for above ave. temps--especially for November. Beyond that, they are probably just guessing colder than last year only because last winter was the warmest EVER! We'll just have to wait and see.

"I am El Nino, Spanish for.... the nino!!!" Remember that? I think weather forecasters are the highest paid bullyouknowwhatters around. The only profession I know where you have to get a specialized degree, get paid handsomely and then there are no repercussions for them being incorrect 50% of the time. I could do no better but im just sayin'.

An aquaintence that hunts told me that we are going to have a bad winter because the deer have a thick layer of belly fat. We'll have to see about that I guess.

How can the weather guy predict what the winter is going to be like when he can barely predict what tomorrow will be like? lol.

Old Farmers' Almanac is predicting a cold, snowy winter from here East.

There were expert forecasts claiming that last year's winter was going to be very snowy in the upper Midwest/Northeast. No refunds have been issued.

Yet, the farmer's almanac was predicting mild and dry. (they didn't do so well this summer, though - they were predicting cool and dry)

Always amuses me people that spout off about weather forecasts, and they don't even understand the difference between climate and a forecast. Nor the basics of how forecasts are made, or even what percent chance of rain means. Would love to see some of your forecasts given the same data. Oh, and who ever said they are highly paid? SMH..... And no, I am not a meteorologist. Nor employed in any way same of form in anything related or any vested interest in such. Arktrees

If your on tv in st.louis forecasting the weather, your highly paid.

I'm often amazed at the astonishing accuracy of day to day forecasting. Sure there's misses. Weather has got to be one of our more chaotic systems. But with regularity it seems meteorologists are able to pinpoint things these days to an amazing degree. +oM

Oooohhhhhhhh, so your not talking about forecasters, but TV personalities who's primary job most of the time is to get viewers........ Forecaster's are the people of NOAA who's job are to forecast the weather. There are a few exceptions in the media, but they are just that....FEW Arktrees

I just looked up the bio of our local forecaster. He's not a meteorologist! He's hosted game shows, disco dancing shows, even hosted the David Letterman show as a substitute host. He's been a disc jockey too, but he doesn't have a degree in the science of meteorology. Apparently he does write his own forecasts. Arktrees, you wrote: TV personalities who's primary job most of the time is to get viewers........ You are so right! I've never paid serious attention to forecasts before this year, but now that I have I can see, at least from my forecaster, it's all about hype. It could be a simple cold front moving through, but the way he describes it you'd think aliens were invading.

Forecasting weather that far ahead is next to useless, especially for winter. You can bet on there being both mild & cold spells tho.

It appears that el nino may be very short lived. No surprise considering that PDO has gone into cold phase which will last for years. We may see a repeat of 1950s. The good news is that we have more CO2 and plants will benefit from extra CO2 with less demand for water. :-)
