 o
buds on Japanese maples...

I posted a message about newly planted crape myrtles putting out new leaves this month. It was explained that this could be due to the stress encountered from planting.
I now have new Japanese maples, both in the ground and in containers, putting out buds! Is this also a result of stress from planting (and possibly the drought conditions we encountered this summer)? Is there anything I can, or should, do at this time? Should I expect the trees to ultimately enter dormancy, producing new buds as usual in the spring?

The snake bark maples (including Japanese maple) always form their spring buds at this time of year....often quite quickly. I would start worrying if new growth was emerging from those buds.

The presence of buds in winter is very common for Japanese maples - typically they will be visible as soon as the leaves drop. Usually they stay relatively dormant during the winter months and start swelling as soon as the weather begins to warm in early spring. They can be subject to desiccation and winter damage if in lots of wind, though.

I agree with smivies - no worries unless the buds start enlarging and produce new leaves :-)
