Basket Case

This oak grows in Kent County, Maryland. In 2007 it had a height of 106', circumference of 294" and spread of 92'. AFAIK its the largest of its kind in the world. The tree sits on property of a parish begun in 1692 and according to church records it was a substantial tree at that time.

paired teeth are clearly visible, leaf underside is pubescent to the naked eye. Large acorns are edible.

The tree is growing in a well-drained spot. The placard declares it to be a Bicentennial tree but does not name the tree. Can you?

Looks like a Quercus michauxii, Swamp chestnut Oak...AKA BASKET oak.

hm4e, it sure looks like a Basket Oak to me. This one is easily distinguished from Swamp White Oak which has smaller acorns often borne in pairs on a peduncle (stem) which could be as much as 2" long.
If they are taken care of oak baskets can last forever. Learn to recognize them and you'll never look at baskets the same again.

They should spend a little on it and install a lightning rod.
