I have posted in the conifer forum too. Here a picture is worth 1000 words. Pale western Hemlock I see now it's blurry. Hopefully that won't matter.

I did not realize there were hurricane force winds in PA today??? You are lucky you survived taking a picture outdoors in such conditions.

frankly.. it looks like it was nutrient deficient in a pot for too long ... and it should recover from that if now in mother earth ..

please delete that pic.. and post a new one.. i am going to have nightmares on that pic ... lol .. yeah its worth 1000 words.. of ridicule.. lol ...

Okay, hahaha. It was actually a calm day and I saw the blurriness after I posted it. I'll take another pic tommorrow. Ken the tree looked good on arrival, which was this spring. I just added fall leaves and wood chips, so the mulch didn't have a role in anything. Someone on the conifer forum suggested that. It was mulched with cypress mulch (bagged) from Lowes before that. I am going to take 2 soil samples (1) from the wild grown Eastern Hemlocks up in the mountains. (2) the area where I have this Western Hemlok growing. I tried the native Eastern Hemlock on the oposite end of my property a couple years ago. I am going to let the university Penn state do it professionally. And then I'll see what if any difference there is. I am able to grow the native Rhodedendron Maximum in my soil, it is all about keeping sun exposure to a minimum with the native rhodie. If the soil test is inconclusive, I'll just quit trying. I should have all the mycorrhizae and fungi it needs in my soil. If not this latest haul of wood chips was scooped up from a pile sitting in forest soil for a while before I bought it from a neighbor. There are some random soil chunks in it. If there is something I can change per the soil test I will try to amend a big area, that is, if it is a minor adjustment. Tommorrow I'll get a better pic.

Sorry it took so long to post another pic. I'm just bumping this up in case anyone has an opinion of the hemlock's appearance with these 2 clearer pics.

You may need to get a close up of the needles for better help, Poaky. If you decide to put off taking a pic while there is an ACTUAL hurricane outside, we will understand ;)

jOnd03, There is torrential rain and ice on the ground, so the hurricane is really going to stop me this time! I will try to take a close-up when-ever things blow over.

transplant shock ..

i would see how it flushes out next spring ..

in my world.. warped as it is.. trees/conifers.. simply dont change color at much speed ... i often wonder if the 'look' isnt a season or two behind when you actually see it ...

it could have been mis-treated in the pot.. by the wholesaler ... over-ferted.. under-fert'd.. etc .. just too many variables to define cause and affect .. IMHO ...
