It's a Japanese maple, Acer palmatum. There are maybe a 1000 different cultivars but with that size, I'd guess maybe just the straight species. With few exceptions, most cultivars don't often get that large.

Curious, what type of location is it in. Is it in the shade of larger trees or anything partially? Or is it the sole shade tree in the yard?

The only acer palmatum I have grown in full sun that I was happy with was a main species tree. Well, virtually full sun.
