Callery Reduction

Callery Pear that is. This pic was taken at my county's compost facility. These are the fruits of Callery pear which has become a thorny, pernicious pest. Although the fruits are hard now, after frost they soften and are eagerly devoured by birds (especially starlings). The reason Callery pear has become such a weed tree is the abundant fruit production and lack of insect/disease problems.

This is a large Callery pear smack in the middle of an environmental restoration. It appears that the tree has been killed quite easily in a safe, environmentally friendly way.

This is the base of the tree. The wounding does not go around all the way. I assume an herbicide has been applied.
While I am a realist, I know that these weeds are here to stay, it doesn't mean we should give up the good fight.
