Isn't it! I was floored when I woke up in the morning as the sun just set these trees on fire with color. This is my first year at this house so I'm happy my neighbor has a couple Sugar Maples!

| Good! Just wanted to make sure there were lurkers. That Witchazel is for real. Some trees are quite fluorescent this year.

Stunning color! You are lucky to have neighbors with such nice taste! Please ID the trees in the second set. The first looks like red maple (Acer rubrum) in the background and tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) in the foreground, the third looks like a fothergilla (interesting since my fothergilla doesn't turn color until about a month after the red maples) and some type of maple in the final photo. Thanks for posting and in advance for the IDs.

| No problem (usually I do). Tulip Tree (Freeman maple in the background) - they actually planted tons of Poplars (yikes!). I already asked to cut down two. Musclewood (Carpinus) Witchazel 'Girard's Purple' - for the flower color Sugar Maple 'Fall Fiesta' We've had three hard frosts (borderline freeze) already so fall got a jump start this year. Today is 81 degrees..sup with that? This F. gardenii that colored up a month ago. Its bright red now with leaves dropping.

Thanks for the IDs. We are having an unusually muted autumn so far with few reds at all, so I'm enjoying your vibrant colors. Not sure if it's due to two summers with long hot & dry spells, or I've heard theories that hurricane Irene carried a lot of salt, even 50 miles inland like me. Or maybe I am just impatient and the brightest colors are yet to come. Is your Carpinus caroliniana? That grows native for me, but always turns a lovely clear yellow, whether growing in the woods or in the open. Is yours a particular selection? I like that color!

Carpinus caroliniana is quite variable but there are certain seedlings that will produce vibrant red. I just got lucky. Although, its year one so things could change. I typically see the brown/yellow more so than red.

Seeing some good orange color on Norway maples this year. Have seen this some other years also. Not that I want anyone to plant Norway maples.

Ron, that is quite interesting because in the very first pic there is a norway maple the far left that isn't pictured that is orange. I've never seen that before. They are quite consistent with their butter yellow fall color.
Norway Maple Orange?

I think it still has some leaves...I'll post tomorrow if it does.

I love Acer saccharum! It might be my very favorite tree. There are lots of them around here, that sometimes display color like that. It seems fall is delayed somewhat - the color is peaking in some of the wetlands, but the trees are only starting. Except for the Norway maples - which never turn orange but occasionally get a decent yellow. This year they have a lot of crunchy brown leaves, for some reason? The crunchy brown leaf syndrome is affecting other trees but to a lesser degree than Acer platanoides. Maybe whatever ever it is will kill off some of them!
