in the mean time... you might want to look into window films see link ....

it might take a lifetime to grow a tree to the second story ...

or a transplant so large.. it will be a real challenge to succeed ... short of professional installation ....

Thanks Ken. Yes, I am definitely planning to be patient. This will be a long term project and pretty much just a "nice to have" if it works out. The window films look interesting. I think that top down blinds are another option that might help in the meantime. (link below) I've found that I can cover the bottom half of my window to let the light in up top and see the sky. That helps lesson the feeling that I'm looking right into the neighbors window which is a little lower.

David, you might want to look at columnar European hornbeam, Carpinus betulus, especially the very fastigiate cultivar, 'Frans Fontaine'. This is a great choice for a tough urban location - very tolerant of less than ideal growing conditions - and with a relatively rapid but quite narrow growth habit.

This a great privacy screening tree, as even when out of leaf in winter, the upward growing, very twggy branching habit provides a fair amout of visual screening.
