Finally, the timing is perfect to be able to collect a lot of seeds off large Mexican Sugar Maple at SFASU arboretum. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Mexican Sugar Maple (Acer skutchii)

Salicaceae, I could just mail some to you along with Montezuma Cypress cones from SFA MC that seems to produce nice looking MCs unlike other MC sources. It's just that Mexican Sugar Maple seems to have low rate of germination. I only got one last time I tried it.

Maybe next time try them before they start to go hard and brown. What other features are you seeing on that specimen that might be different?

Bboy, Easier said than done. Now that I've moved to another city, that's extra 2 hours drive to the only source of Mexican Sugar Maple seeds that I know of (over 5 hours). 2 years ago, there wasn't many seeds to pluck off the tree (at the same time of the year) while this year, there are seeds everywhere waiting to be plucked. What's different about it? Depends on how you look at it, I suppose. Seems that if you go west of Mississippi River, you end up with native pockets of Sugar maple trees in Oklahoma, Texas and Mexico. Makes you wonder what it used to look like back then if they were more widespread...

Oh wow, I had no idea any sugar maples grew this far south, what a great looking tree. Thanks for the view, Lou. :)

Species is native down as far as Guatemala. Box elder is as well.
