Dern bucks. It's bad but certainly not fatal. Aside from some very careful removal of loose bark, just to make things look tidier for you-not the tree, there's nothing to be done. Trees don't heal their wounds anyway, they wall them off with a combination of chemicals you can't see and new growth in coming years which you can. If the damage is not repeated, which BTW is a distinct possibility-some bucks take a liking to a certain tree and revisit it- there will come a time when you would never guess this had happened.

At most there could be some minor die-back of branches above the wound. That would be due to interrupted sap flow in that area. I can't tell from the pic if the wounding goes into the cambium or not. I'd say the biggest thing is what happens next-more buck rubbing or absence of same.

thanks tom. I wrapped it with corrugated cardboard tree wrap. is this advisable? will it prevent further buck damage? if not I will use stakes and fencing to keep them out.

i see METAL guy wires ... how are they attached to the tree???

3 metal fence posts.. and fishing line will keep the deer away ... the beauty of the fishing line.. with green posts.. is that they will sorta blend in ... see link

Here is a link that might be useful: under snow fence accessories ... green with white tip ... 6 foot tall ...

I see green in some of the bark fragments, which means there is cambium damage. Does not mean it is fatal to the tree, but it certainly not good for it. Tree looks to be freeman maple (i.e. Autumn Blaze Maple) from the looks of the bark. If so, these are very vigorous, and it will have an excellent chance to recover fully.

One thing you might do is try to deter the deer. One thing I have read about is to spread blood meal around an area for a few weeks. It is known that prey animals tend to avoid areas with the smell of blood, which indicates a predator in the area. Since deer are prey animals, theoretically they would avoid an area where blood meal is scattered repeatedly during their "rubbing" season. BTW, I tried this with rabbits and it seemed to help, but I only spread blood meal occasionally for a few weeks. Any longer, or continuously, and they are likely to ignore the scent after a period of time.

ken - the metal wires are looped around through sections of garden hose to protect the tree. I kept them on to keep the tree from leaning due to high winds.

ark - good eye yes this is autumn blaze maple. I do believe the wound is into the sapwood. I'll try to bloodmeal if I can find some at local store.
