Bent Pin Oak Trunk, straighten?

My parents purchased a huge Pin Oak in a container. It's probably a 3" and 20'+ tall. The problem is that it's bent or leaning. It looks like when it was moved to a bigger pot at one point in it's life it wasn't put in straight so as it grew, it went up, but the bottom was already in the put crooked. Now that it's in the ground with the bottom portion straight in the ground it looks like it has a major bow starting about 5' up. Can I stake this thing at the point it starts to bend and straighten over time? As the tree grows will it become more rigid and straight with the guy wires? Anything I should know about doing this. I have seen some tree straightening devices online. Anyone use one?

The part above the bend will grow straight in time. It might end up being more graceful and interesting than if bolt upright. But: a common thing causing nursery trees to have trouble holding themselves upright is root deformities caused by careless container culture. You should look for signs of this, if the tree is too badly deformed it may just pinch itself off later, or topple over due to inadequate anchorage - even many years from now, when big and heavy enough to do damage to anything nearby.

It did grow straight up, but that is not straight to the ground because it was up potted incorrectly. Right now the trunk goes up straight for five feet then bends one direction and that portion is straight too. Can I tie it up past that bend to correct the bend? Maybe I'm not explaining well. Does that make sense?

| Ok this is all I can do for now. This is the tree still in the pot, you can see that the trunk is not going straight up out of the pot, but that the top growth is up. You can see the curve of the trunk. Imagine now that the trunk at the ground is straight up, so the bend makes the tree look like it is leaning. Will guy wires over time get the top to straighten out?

After the leaves turn, wash the roots, correct any deformities thereby exposed, then plant it out, wait for it to reorient itself over time.

You will be surprised how much it will straighten out with not a bit of help from you once it is in the ground. I have seen trees that were leaning in one direction at planting move about 20-40* and end up leaning the other direction while fighting for sunlight. This happened in particular on a willow oak I planted this spring. Craziest thing I have seen as far as tree movement goes. Other trees have done it to a smaller degree. One OG maple I planted and staked to keep it from blowing over this spring was straight as an arrow when I released her from her restraints this past August. Now she is crooked as a crime boss as she leans out for sunlight that reaches her top around 9:30 and then is full sun the rest of the day. Tree's gonna do what it wants, staked or not. Do as bboy suggested and enjoy watching nature do its thing! John

If I had to bet, I'd bet bboy's crystal ball was right on target.

i do not think that i could look at the monstrosity of scaffolding/staking required to straighten a tree of that size.. for the next 5 to 10 years ... either love it for what it is.. or return it as un-approved ... who said every tree has to be straight anyway ... i just wouldnt plant it leaning or heading towards the house ... what i would do.. is go to the spot it will be viewed from ... the most .... and keep turning the tree.. until the view from that spot.. makes it appear straight to the viewer ... WHO CARES WHAT THE NEIGHBORS HAVE TO LOOK AT .. lol ... you will probably be surprised that it is a straight tree in at least one plane of view ... ken
