What part of the country do you live in? You mentioned zone 6, but I don't know whether you get much rain in a given year, for example.

Big, fairly fast growing, strong wooded, good shade, I'm leaning toward some type of oak tree, such as the red oak group - Shumard oak gets really big and has nice leaves. Would you like this tree to hold onto a bunch of dead leaves through the winter, or not? Shumard can; I think pin oak do. But my nutall and swamp white oak trees don't.

Sourwood, red oak, and sweet bay magolia should do nicely.

Don't plant it too deply or too close to your house.
