| Can anyone tell me what this tree is ( 2 red-leafed pictures and one trunk)? Thanks

| That is a sumac (Rhus). Not poison sumac. |
|
| Yep, one of the most colorful natives. Unfortunately, usually not very tall but forms colonies and spreads in a horizontal manner. Besides all the callery pear seedlings, sumac is the most eye-catching common tree on the sides of the road around here. John |

| Thanks. Good to know that they are not poisonous. Poison or not poison looks pretty much the same to me. How can you tell if it is poisonous or not? |
|
| Well for one thing, poison sumac grows in wet areas not on the dry side of the road. If it's blooming, the flowers are not terminal clusters (at the end of the branch), they are in the leaf axils. The ripe fruit is white, not red. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Poison sumac
|
| Esh, thanks, the link was very helpful. Now I can differentiate the two. I never dared to touch any plant looking like the sumac leaf arrangements, for I couldn't tell if they were poisonous or not. This helps a lot. THANKS |

| Yep, it's Sumac and specifically: Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum) |
