Trying to germinate tree seeds

| I am trying to force germinate various tree seeds right now. Is the baggie method in the fridge okay to do? I have scarified the seeds, placed them in damp seed starter mix in ziplock bags, and I poked many holes in the bags, and placed into the drawer of the frig. Will this work? and what next?
Thanks.

Tree seed germination varies a good deal by species and variety. Michael Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants contains excellent germination and growing on advice for an enormous number of plants.

Some seeds require stratification/vernalization. That is often done in the frig, but be careful about poking holes in the bag. That could allow the medium to dry out fairly quickly. If you use this method to prepare the seed, check for sufficient moisture frequently. Also, you may find other media are superior to seed starter mix for this step. In addition to many book available on starting seed, there are countless sites on the web about the subject. Just google the scientific name of whatever plant you are trying to grow along with the word "germination". Another option is winter sowing. There is a whole forum here on Gardenweb devoted to that subject. Some other Gardenweb forums you may want to search through, for even more info, include the Growing From Seed Forum and the Plant Propagation Forum. If you have specific questions about specific types of woody plant seeds, you could also ask here, but it would take pages of typing to cover all aspects of growing all types of woody plant seeds here.

wouldnt one ID the tree .... then google such with the latin name.. to find specifics on the proper propagation methods THEN gather the seeds.. and treat them according to what the research said .... rather than sticking them all in the fridge.. willy nilly??? how many z18 plants need a severe and long cold period???? what is the conversion for z18 .... if i am 5.. then 18 must be on the boundary to hell .... rotflmbo .... i know its sunset something or another.. good old CA just has to be different. .... anyway .... ACCORDING 'only' to the facts... you are just jamming everything in the fridge... i think you need a more knowledgeable approach ... whatever you do .. have fun and good luck ken

Thank you all for responding. So it sounds to me like the bag method could work, I'll just need to monitor closely. I considered using vermiculite but read that a good seed starter was an excellent choice for bag method, but person who posted mentioned something about the window sill and never stated if could be done in frig. Ken, I believe Z18 is close to zone 10 or 11 in temp/hum. Not sure why my little area has its own zone. Maybe because of the amount of canyons and wind here, but primarily desert region. The seeds that I am trying to grow however, are Sequoia Sempervirens, Bald Cypress and Canadian Hemlock, all of which are definitely cold germinated plants. Thanks again, and I will have fun if these things actually sprout. Remy

Ken, Remy's zone 18 is from the Sunset Zone system (not what most of us use). It is a complete different system that the normal USDA system. He might want to change it to "sunset z18" or something like that, for clarification. ZONE 18. Hilltops and Valley Floors of Interior Southern California Growing season: mid-Mar. through late Nov. Summers are hot and dry; rain comes in winter, when lows reach 28 degrees to 10 degrees F/-2 degrees to -12 degrees C. Plants from the Mediterranean and Near Eastern regions thrive here.
