| Wow, that was a large wingnut. They grow quite fast when there is enough water, but I never came across such a huge one. Last week I collected seeds from chinese wingnut, pterocarya hupehensis, I really hope they will sprout. |

| That looks very good, mine are only foot tall, and also probably not as hardy as need be for this climate. |

| USDA zone 5 should be all right, but it should be planted in a wet spot. It's a bog tree where it's native. |

| That sounds right, Huggorm. This one was growing in a stream valley with Gunnera just a bit further along. Probably very wet ground all year round. These gardens were begun in the 16th century and developed in 18th and 19th centuries, so the larger trees are pretty old. |

| FWIW, Gunnera is a zone 7 plant in all the catalogs. |

| Not my photo (or kids) but the best one I could find of the Pterocarya fraxinifolia at the Vineland Agricultural Research Station in the Niagara region of Ontario. Based on the history of the site, this one is likely 100-120 years old. Photo from seedscanada on Flickr....
