one might wonder if knowing what seed you are trying to grow.. as it would matter to the information provided ... unless you are expecting a thesis on every known tree int he universe ....

if they are zone appropriate and locally obtained ..... pot them up.. and put them outside.. and let them sprout in spring ... winter taking care of the cold part ...

Assuming you are going to lift the lid and check on them once a month or so, they should be fine. It helps if they are just damp , not wet. I stratify mine in the fridge too , because there are so many mice here that outdoor stratifying means I have to build 'fort seedstore'. What are you planting? I'm in PEI, just east/north of you, and have chestnut, pine nuts and a bunch of stuff in the fridge.

Another voice from the peanut gallery on gathering some info, particularly from government or University sources about how to break dormancy on the particular seeds you intend to stratify. Some need a cold/warm/cold to break seed dormancy, some have chemical compounds you need to disable that will automatically keep your seed from germinating and the length of time for the cold treatment may vary considerably. I have also seen people try to stratify seeds that don't even need a cold treatment. I am using the moist sand this year on mine, but have had good luck also using finely milled and just lightly moistened peat as well inside baggies. Don't just pop them in and forget about them, either. You might want to check a few times in the winter to make sure the moisture level is still there and re-dampen if necessary.
