| I came across this interesting tree yesterday while out taking fall foliage pics. It does not have thorns like most callery offspring and although the leaves are similar, up close in person, they are a little different. Trunk bark is also different IMO. Finally, fall color while pretty is also unlike callery.
Wrong bark for persimmon. And wrong fruit. Lack of thorns and fruit ID among others rules out osage orange. Any thoughts?
For some reason the bark pic is not showing up. I think it is a problem on my end, though. Let me know if it is missing for the rest of you. John |

| It look like a Pear to me. Fall color is consistent with what we see here. Confidence level is maybe 60%. |

| The more I look at it the more I agree with you and the poster in Ark's fall color topic... It does have a lot of the pear look to it. I have never seen offspring in the wild without thorns, though. I am going to collect a twig and some fruit when I get home today and compare them to some wild ones out back. Did the tree trunk ID pic show up? |
| Yep, also resembles pear. I'm by no means a tree ID expert though. I'm driving by a few this afternoon. I'll take a closer look but they do have the same fall color as of right now. Fruit sure look like Callery as well. |
| Yep, callery pear. |
| Interesting, I thought most callery pears have next years flower buds present when the foliage turns and is released. Do the buds appear in spring? John |
| Definitely a pear tree, complete with pears. |
| I've never looked for flower buds on a callery pear, but on other things like Serviceberry, the buds which result in flowers are not readily distinguishable from those that won't. |
| OK, I am conceding it is a callery pear if the 3 of you guys(and gal) are sure that is it. I believe. I am still wondering about the flower bud issue. All the cultivars planted in town do indeed have next years flower buds present. Perhaps I should inspect the fence straggler a little closer. Thanks all! John |

| The buds are different on callery kind of like dogwood. You know where the flowers are going to be because they are large and white in appearance. I will take a pic if we slow down at work. There are a ton of them in the parking lot outside. John |
| I'll check out some of them in my neighborhood on my next walk. It's a beautiful day here in North Georgia so it might be today! |
