I'm well aware that, for overall health and establishment, obviously, smaller trees are better. However, for "effect" I might plant one or two very large caliper (6" or so) trees (probably Sugar Maples) on my property. I realize they say it takes one year per inch caliper for full establishment, but when will a well-cared-for tree at least "look" normal, i.e., have a leaf canopy of normal density and size? I've seen newly planted trees that have such a thin leaf canopy at first, they look nearly dead, but over time, improve. If it takes 6 years to return to full growth on a 6" caliper transplant, about how long before it at least "looks" normal to a casual observer?

I've planted plenty large b&b plants (only in spring before bud break) and they all look normal with the exception of some having smaller leaves the first season or two. You might not see the potential growth rate return for several years. I planted a 14' sugar maple two springs ago and it looks "normal" per say, its just not putting out a foot of growth. To me none of that matters. Its the fact that the tree is more stressed and its tougher for it to resist other stresses, like pests, diseases, heat, wind, etc. Maples bounce back quite nicely from b&b.

Yep, baring improperly sized rootballs/transplant shock/poor aftercare, the canopy should be able to retain its fullness. Top-growth rate is what is expected to be reduced before establishment.
