Skyjumper, coming from a StLouis boy where we do not have EAB, YET. That is what I have been on the lookout for and expecting to see.

Where are you?

Uh oh... Where do you live? That certainly looks like the classic D shape exit hole to me. And the squiggly lines on the wood beneath the bark also look suspicious.

RE: EAB Diagnosis??

I am in Chicago suburbs.

but here's the kicker... this is NOT an ash tree. it is a willow clump. but I am pretty sure this is EAB. I do have 6 mature Ash trees on my property, and at least one shows similar symptoms (although not as severe).

comparing this to other nearby infected Ash trees that have been removed by the city arborist, the symptoms are identical.

RE: EAB Diagnosis??

contact your county extension office ....

that is indicative.. of why i removed all my ash ...

doesnt look like willow bark.. but ID is not my forte ...

are you saying the city pays to take out homeowners trees????

You need professional ID as mentioned above to remove all doubt. Let us know how it turns out.

There are other species of Agrilus that attack other tree species (e.g. Bronze Birch Borer on birches), and they all leave D-shaped exit holes.
