i would have just stuck it in the ground to begin with ... ma nature is so much better at wintering things over ...

are you presuming.. because its budding.. that it has roots???? ...

but if you look... you may as well stick it in the soil ... get rid of the potting media is you do ... do you have bad clay soil????

W is extremely easy to root... whether this is the best time of year to do it.. is the real question ...

BTW ... i would have taken three or so cuttings... to increase my odds of success ... and i would have probably gone with 6 to 8 inches.. how big is yours????

every place there is a bump on your stick.. there are dormant buds ... so cutting it into smaller pieces MIGHT be an idea ...

there is no instant gratification... as to size.. when trying to root cuttings ...

I do have thick clay soil, I live a few miles from the Mississippi, in the old river bed, down in the bottoms. I just did it out of curiosity (I read you can do hardwood cuttings in fall) and I want to go ahead and stick it in my sister's yard. It is 12 inches long and about 1/2" thick

Large willow stems root extremely easily. Willow water is even used as a rooting hormone for other plants because of the willow's rooting ability. Go ahead and plant......it's pretty much a sure thing that it will develop into a tree. And much easier to tend in the ground as opposed to a container.
