Ouch! Winter storm do it? Did you already make a clean cut? Is it on the "upwards" facing side of the trunk/branch where rain is going to get into it? Any chance of using photo bucket or similar to link in a picture? Humanity still has not figured out what to seal tree wounds with. Bunch of snake oil and guessing involved. If it were mine and collecting water I would seal it. If it were mine and not collecting water leave it alone.

in my world.. trees heal themselves ... the know-it-alls call it compartmentalization ... anything applied to seal out problems.. eventually fails.. and seals in problems ... dry wood is not a problem.. get some moisture behind your spray/paint on goo.. and guess what.. it never dries and rots ... you trim the best you can.. and let nature do the work.. and sometimes that means taking down the tree .... and as noted.. w/o apic.. who knows do as lennon /mcCartney .... IMHO .... and i dont mean shoot it with a revolver.. lol ... and i dont mean tying Eleanor Rigby to it and smearing her with some tar like goo ... ken

I agree with Ken, except for the last statement, obviously written by him while heavily medicated.
|
Ken must've been watching the movie "Misery" this weekend?

Doc Farwell's Seal and Heal is the best product I have ever used. I had a wound on the main trunk a Picea abies 'Reflexa' that weeped sap for 5 months. I could not get it to heal. It was severe enough to puddle at the base of the trunk. It was just amatter of time till it died. Before application I cut all the damaged soft tissue out down to the hardwood then cleaned the wound throughly. After two applications of Doc's wonder product the wound was sealed and on the mend. Hit the link. Dave

Snake oil sealer (as mentioned directly above, IMO) often does more harm than good and is rarely of any benefit. A number of scientific studies have been done on these types of products, and none, that I've seen, indicate these products are useful in most cases. Many have shown drawbacks.

Well brandon7 if I was a skeptic like you the tree would be dead. It did what it was advertised to do and I saved my tree. Most scientific studies along with think tanks are flawed and should be avoided. In their place common sense is the more valuable option. IMO a worth while product. Dave

"Most scientific studies along with think tanks are flawed and should be avoided. In their place common sense is the more valuable option." That's just the kind of thinking that challenged Galileo! Maybe you should join the Flat Earth Society. They would agree with you wholeheartedly. That trash has been well demonstrated to be worthless and harmful in most situations. It's snake oil for the gullible. If you take the time to look, you can find hundreds of threads on here that confirm that.

"Most scientific studies ... should be avoided. In their place common sense is the more valuable option." BTW, that truly has to be one of the most oxymoronic statements I've ever heard.
|
But brandon7 the fact remains ...it worked contrary to what you state: "That trash has been well demonstrated to be worthless and harmful in most situations." I knew you wouldn't be able to handle it. To over qualified to understand. People like you always come up with 100's of links to prove a point. In your case my way or the highway has been debunked. I have proof it did work. I can send a photo your way. Sorry to have made your day uncomfortable. I apologize. Sometime get to know the little guy in the field with a few years of hands on experience. You know the guy that gets his hands dirty. Their ability to understand how nature works has merit because they are a part of it. They don't sit behind a desk reading scientific reports. Don't bother to post a come back. I won't be wasting my time looking at what you have to say. Go tell someone else they are a liar and their information is incorrect. Best regards, Dave

Dave, I think the problem is that you have little to no practical experience. I don't think for a minute that you are lying; I just think you are very unfamiliar with the topic. If you were out "getting your hands dirty" more often you'd surely have a much greater appreciation for the advancements made in horticulture over the last century. I haven't directly addressed the particular instance of your tree because (a) I am not familiar with all the facts of the case and (b) I highly doubt you had enough controls on your experiment for it to have any meaning at all. In any case, your one trial would in no way discount or lessen the impact of the many carefully conducted trials that demonstrated the complete worthlessness of the various tree goops, such as the one you mentioned. Probably the most disappointing thing about all this is that there are still people who fall victim to the snake oil salesmen because they are too lazy or too set in their ways to research the topic. One does have to be willing in order to learn. One has to learn in order not to be a duped.
