I just ordered some seeds of this magnolia, because its reportedly hardy to zone 3. Anyone have any experience with this tree?

I have had one for a few years. Kind of slow growing, and it will take a dozen years or more before it starts blooming. No hurry though, I have put it in the edge of my woodland where it can grow as it want. It isn't really an eye catcher like some of the other magnolias, but a nice tree to have in your collection. And the cold hardiness is fantastic.

More like half a foot a year, but my climate is not ideal for magnolias either.

Actually, large-growing, full-sized forms of M. kobus have a prettiness in flower and a more organized, spreading (and therefore impressive) branching habit that bushy forms of the species (and related species) lack.

Is it true that "var. borealis" isnt even a viable taxonomic name?

Yes, it is questionable. Used for plants from Hokkaido and perhaps others that have the characters I described above.

I think mine is a "Borealis", but I'm not completely sure. Anyway it grows upward and seems to take tree form even if it is still only six feet or so.
