| I just dug up a couple of redbud volunteers, 3 and 4 feet tall, to transplant to a more appropriate location. And I did not manage to get an ideal amount of root.
I know from previous experience that newly planted redbuds can sometimes die back to the ground and then send of up new growth. I'm thinking that these particular trees I dug will do just that, due to the substantial root loss. Would I be helping them out in any way if I pruned them back now? Or would this harm them? Thanks for your insight, farmeranne |

| Thanks for setting me straight, Ken! Went out and planted one, heeled in the other 'til I decide where to put it- a recurring theme around here. It will be interesting to see how they respond next year. |

| Thought I would follow up with a progress report on the redbud I transplanted last fall with what seemed like not enough root. I followed Ken's advice and did not perform amputation, and it looks simply smashing, even in this heat and drought! I have been watering it periodically, but haven't been giving it anywhere near the amount of water a bareroot tree needs, especially in 100 degree weather and drought. All my redbuds seem to be weathering the drought much better than some other trees. |
