Red Sunset Maple Roots

I had a hybrid poplar tree which had many surface roots and raised the ground around the tree. I recently had the tree cut down. Am thinking of planting a red sunset maple but have read that this also has surface roots. Will I have the same problem I had with the hybrid poplar? Can you suggest a tree that does not have this problem?

Can you tell us more about your soil type, your zone and goals for the tree (ie height, width, leaf texture, fall color, blooms, fruit, etc)?

Assuming its on own roots or grafted to Acer rubrum (hmmm, that just got me thinkging) Red Sunset "can" have surface roots at a very late age.

Honestly I've never come across an Acer rubrum with surface roots. Norway, Silver and Freeman maple, yes.

As an immediate "like" suggestion would be Sugar maple as it has deeper roots.

Most oaks are obvious choices. Yellowwood is another one with deep roots.

Hybrid poplars are Brontosaurean trees not suitable for the vicinity of living and access areas. Most other kinds will not be as overbearing. However, Red Sunset = 'Franksred' is a full-sized maple tree in time, so it will still have the impacts on the site of a full-sized tree. The first thing that may be noticed with a large-growing maple is that you can't grow anything underneath it after awhile, due to all the thirsty roots.

In a rainy summer climate on a damp soil this may not be the same situation it can be elsewhere.

let me put it this way ...

i hate poplars.. lol ...

the problem you saw in 5 or 10 years.. on the poplar.. you WILL SEE on the maple.. in 30 to 50 years ...

as to your age.. and if that will be an issue in 30 to 50 years.. i do not know ...

of all the trees in this wide world.. i wonder.. why you are limiting yourself.. to ONLY these two options ???? what about oak??? where are you .... and are you open to other options????

another way to say this.. is that anything that claims to be FAST GROWING.. which is the ONLY salable point of a poplar ... is going to be fast to be a problem.. and fast to die ... as you have learned ... and one might suggest.. if this maple is marketed under the same idea.. of fast growing.. well.. my gut tells me.. its might be another problem tree .. but again.. its the time frame of how fast it will all happen ...

ken

ps: i hate maples too.. lol .. but that is because i can not garden under them ... and if you had poplar.. i will presume.. you werent gardening under them anyway .. so it doesnt matter ... but if you have any inclination ... to want to do such ... you need something beyond a maple ..

pps: you will probably be killing root suckers from that poplar.. for upwards of 3 years.. even if you have the stump ground out ... they will need to be snipped and treated with roundup or stump killer.. until they stop coming back ... let us know when this happens ....

Ah, something we can agree on! Specially Populus deltoides.

It just pains me to see all these juvenile plants falling apart in my neighbors hard. I just can't tell you how bad they suck. I'm getting aggravated just thinking about it!

I luckily talked my neighbor into allowing me to cut two down near the lot line. My 2 year old could snap a 5" caliper branch for cripes sake. By the way one of them, which was MAYBE 7 years old had a massive surface root about 6' out from the trunk. If they are in the woods, fine I guess. As a landscape tree they need to be banned. These trees make Boxelders and Silver Maples kings and queens.

I have seen Acer rubrum with a few surface roots. Not as bad as some trees but they do happen.

But I wouldn't let that bother me.

I've had a Red Sunset Maple growing in my tree lawn for 18 years. Haven't had much in the way of surface roots. However, the roots right below the surface make it difficult to grow anything but shallow-rooted plants beneath the tree.
If you're an allergy sufferer, a Red Sunset Maple is a good choice because it doesn't release much pollen.
