gingko problem(i think)

recently moved from the south to a far more northerly setting and brought a couple of gingko seedlings along with me in their 4 inch pots. on the one hand i know they need a dormancy period but on the other i'm conserned that the winters up here will be much more severe than what they could possibly be prepared for when i consider that their mother is conditioned to nearly zone 8.

please advise as i have no clue what to make of this.

I think Pancotto must have posted to the wrong thread. I've done that before. It can be very embarrassing. LOL

Ginkgos are hardy to around zone 3, so zone 4 will probably not be a problem assuming they are planted in the ground. I did notice that you said they were seedlings. Do you have them in pots or did you plant them? Do you have any way to provide them with a little extra protection until they are established?

Provenance can make quite a bit of difference in some species, but those are more the exception. More typically, provenance makes a very little, or no, difference in hardiness. Ginkgos aren't native anyway, so immediate provenance differences should be nil. I would be more concerned about the seedlings being in pots (if they are) or not being well established (if they were recently planted), than I would where they came from.

interrresting!

i took them out of the ground and potted them up just this past summer. they've been in their pots ever since.

perhaps i should put them in the ground and mulch heavily?

Either that or overwinter them in an unheated garage or somewhere that will provide some protection but still ensure they stay dormant. If it's possible to plant them and provide a little protection, that's what I'd do.
