Are these trees as bad as bradford or cleveland? I'd like to know before I make the mistake of planting it.

'Autumn Blaze ' is just one more cultivar of the very structurally impaired and Fire Blight prone Callery Pear. As one of our esteemed members recently explained :

Pyrus calleryana = cow
Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford ' = Holstein

Pyrus calleryana 'Autumn Blaze ' = Guernsey

why not plant it ...

you can always make firewood of it later ...

just dont leave it for the next owner ... dont plant it 18 inches from the house.. dont put it upwind, since the flowers smells like year old gym socks ... and dont nap under it in a windstorm..

ok.. you talked me into it.. for a buck.. get rid of it

Yes it is prone to wind damage as it is weak wooded, but if you can plant it in an area where it is not exposed to high winds, it should be OK. It is better structured than Bradford pears. It has GREAT LATE SEASON fall color. Anything that extends fall a bit in my yard would be welcome. For that reason alone, I would try to find a place to plant it.

If it was such as piece of junk, I doubt the Chicago Botanic garden would plant about 4 of these at their main entrance.

MOBOT has experimental bamboo and an empress tree as well as a couple other questional experiments. Oh, and I am not afraid to call out a botanical garden.

The pears have proven to be invasive in many areas. That is more a deal breaker for me. The ones at my work are especially prolific. Keep in mind I have chosen to keep mine until it falls. Mayne just that I am sick of cutting down trees.

yeah prone to wind damage is a big issue for me, as where I am wind funnels through my property and blows the hell out of everything.
