Euonymus americanus possibly?
RE: Need weird tree/weird seed ID please.

The fruit says it's a Euonymous. I don't know enough to say which one.
RE: Need weird tree/weird seed ID please.-

The above suggestion is not listed as native to Canada that I can find, though, so it is probably not correct!
RE: Need weird tree/weird seed ID please. addendum.

E americanus looks as if it has bumpy fruit in pictures. One common name is Strawberry bush. (I have never seen it). But it is listed as being in Canada.

Looks like E. europaeus. This is one of the more prevalent ones in western cultivation, might therefore be seen "in the woods" back there fairly often - E. alatus is a notorious weed in E North America.

Yes, for sure a Euonymous. Not sure if it's Eastern wahoo or an escape from horticulture. +oM

Interesting flora - what I find online says zone 5-9 and none of the range maps I have found indicate it resides in Canada. Range is up to New York and Pennsylvania, though. It sure would not be a surprise to find it in Canada. Canadianplant, are you near the border around NY/Pennsylvania? John ps - and bboy is right about e. alatus being so invasive so that is, IMO, the most likely by default. A close up of twigs and foliage arrangement as well as bark might help the the more knowledgeable on here (like the two above that already responded) attain a positive ID

Looks quite a bit like E. atropurpureus. There's tons of it in the woods behind my house - I thought the fruit capsules were more pale, though.

Winged Spindle Euonymus alatus - you can see the winged bark on the branches at the top right of the pic. Resin

Wow..... thanks for all the responses. Ive been trying to ID this for a few years. Im in NW ontario, which is close but not really in its native range. I will say that close to lake superior, there is a microclimate where oaks, and red maple make it up here. Anyways, I started with euonymus, and ended up finding E. Atropurpureus. IT looks almost identical to this one. The tree in the pic has no wings, you can trust me on that. Either way, interesting its so far north of its "regular" native area...

I was saying it looked like E. europaeus to me, and that because E. alatus was a weed back there this other species might sometimes come up on its own also. E. alatus has different fruits and growth habit.

It doesn't look like E europaeus to me. The leaves and stems don't look right - too robust. And by the time they fruit round here the foliage is usually already coloured, if not dropped, certainly not bright green. Resin, I looked and looked for the wings and I couldn't persuade myself they were there even at top right. Looks more like some sort of lesion just on that branch.
