Parkway Maple Trees Planted with Cages

We took out three norway maple trees on our property that were planted with a big wire cage. I was planning to roundup stump and leave them but now I see the cage I feel I need to SOMEHOW dig it out. I have spent time today digging around the stump and can see the wire and twine. I have some colorado blue spruce trees growing only four to five feet from the cage. My concern is the evergreens roots will run into these cages and perhaps not a good idea? The holes in the cages are about 4" square. Can you help me know if I need to remove wire cage or not worry about it. I want to do what is best in the long run for the evergreens. Thanks so much.

While it would indeed have been better if those cages had been cut away when the maples were installed-both for them and your spruce, this does sound like a case where it's just not reasonable to expect to get that wire out. That is, if I'm interpreting this correctly-old wire baskets with roots (From maples) growing in and around them.

And in reality, it quite likely will not hurt the spruce trees, especially if those 4" holes are all full of maple tree roots, etc. If you do want to try and get as much of it out as you can, a small bolt cutter is what you want.

do you really have nothing better to do???

seriously.. take a deep breath..

whats the spacing on the cage.. 4 inches?? ...

there are not many trees that are going to have 4 inch ROOTS ... in the time it takes those cages to rust rot ... [that ought to get a response .... but they better come up with a reason for you to dig up cages .. beyond just mocking me] ...

ignore them ... there is no way you are going to get under the stump anyway ...

if in 50 to 100 years.. your spruce are still alive.. and you are also.. and i am wrong .. give me a call.. i will be 90+ .. and will send you a shiny penny ... if i remember how to answer the phone ...

My goodness was I glad to read your comments! Thank you both for taking the time to respond. I had spent a couple hours out trying to dig around the trunk and thought to myself this is hopeless! So in I came to post my question. Then when I read your comments I was delighted! I will let it be and go on to decorating for Christmas. Lol
