soil killing my sequoia tree

I have a large sequoia tree on my front lawn where roots were exposed. My elderly neighbors insisted I get some dirt to cover the roots which I finally yet relunctantly did. In addition to the mound of dirt I surrounded my tree, I decided to plant shade friendly plants to accentuate my landscaping. Several months later, another neighbor mentionned my Sequoia tree appeared to be distressed and attributed it to the possibility that the roots were not oxygenating properly. Could this be possible? And what should I do? Help!!
