That last row of pavers is uneven, somebody is gonna trip there. I would try to fix that. I had to say it, sorry. Is the Elm big enough to be landscaping under already? It is limbed up high already? I would just let the tree settle in til spring before planting any water stealing plants in it's root zone. It will help you see if the tree settled any after planting, also. This is my totally unprofessional opinion.

Actually there is a two lane road right over the tree line. The road is real busy and people are always looking over at you.

The tree that were geting is about 16 ft tall and yes it pretty trimmed up.

I would let it get settled in for 6 months before planting anything in the root zone. i am a homeowner like you, no pro, but the tree needs to settle in, in my mind anyway. Why not give it a chance to settle in then check the trees trunk to make sure it is at the best height, and then plant whatever you need to. What's the hurry, anyway. But. overall it's your tree/yard, to do as you see fit.

The Drake elm is deciduous right? So you're going to see the road after the tree drops its leaves?

I'm wondering why you did not select an evergreen tree, unless Drake elm is mostly evergreen in your region.
