Where to buy larger trees in Central NJ?

I'm going to need to replace one or two signature trees after the 13 inches of snow that followed Hurricane Sandy. The one in the front yard was identified as an ornamental apple of some sort, and had a remarkable gnarly growth pattern. I'd like not start from scratch with a sapling, but rather invest in a larger tree --- I don't think I have 25 years left to wait for a tree to grow to the size of the lost one. BTW, we're in Monmouth County.

this is a pretty local question.. for a world wide audience ...

especially when you dont really tell us what you mean by 'larger' ...

if it were me.. i would visit the nearest one or two .. TOP LEVEL nurseries.. and ask them what they can ORDER IN.. for spring delivery ...

this is the time of year.. they are doing such.. and frankly.. that is how you get what you want .... in the size you want ...

none of this.. waiting around and hoping bigboxstore stocks them ...

also.. perhaps a new post .. to attract others back .. on what options you might have.. since you really didnt talk about that either ... i am presuming you might not want 'some sort of apple' ....

and finally.. the bigger the tree.. the harder it will take the transplant.. and the harder it will be for a novice to have it survive ... if you are doing this yourself.. i would suggest nothing bigger than about 6 feet ... after the pot is sunk in the ground ...

if you are paying a pro to do it.. the sky is the limit ...
but the bigger the transplant.. the more important PROPER watering will be.. so when its all said an done.. come back and learn how to water it properly ....

good luck

I'd suggest posting in the NJ forum, though I notice its pretty quiet in there...

Could also try the Mid Atlantic forum...

Or the Metro NY forum...

Or maybe the Northeast Coastal Gardening forum...

My favourite place was Princeton Nurseries, but they closed a couple of years back after being in business for almost a century. I heard that a company called Select Tree Farms purchased Princeton's inventory. I have no idea what that means. You may want to research.

Other places include Holmdel Nursery (somewhat limited selection), and Barton Nursery in Edison.
