Remove this Red Maple or no

Storm damage here in pa due to the snow storm. We came home and now our tree looks like this. Should we take it down in the spring or have it topped or trimmed back?

Based on the pictures, I certainly would not remove it, nor would I have it topped. Topping is not a good practice, and doesn't help anything.

Have a certified arborist evaluate it once the leaves have dropped. Some cuts are definitely in order to get the broken branches pruned back to a good spot for wound enclosure.

Alex is correct, hire a pro. NEVER top a tree

Here is a link that might be useful: topping

...except for Bradford Pears. I think Jess deserves a pass for what he had done to his BP in another post. (-:

Of course, the preferred pruning method for Bradfords is a cut at ground level.

Well thought about cutting the Bradford but again wanted to keep it as long as we could and always worried about it braking since it was 18 years old or so. Im glad we did top it since this snow storm came early but I hope by getting the same guy (arborist out to look at the maple tree) He can get it back to a nice looking tree in a year or two. Do you think the maple will fill in or will always look like it had a split down the middle?

jess,
The Red Maple CAN be saved, but you need a CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL ARBORIST. Joe Blow tree trimmer does not know how to handle this damage, and will likely result in the eventual lose of the tree. Even of a "tree trimming service" claims 50 years experience, RARELY do they actually have a freaking clue as to what they are doing. I competent Arborist would likely refuse to "top" a tree. So your guy may call himself and "Arborist", I have concerns that they really aren't.

As for your tree, it will be a multi-year process, for complete recovery. Those branches didn't grow in 4-5 months, and they will not be replaced for some time. However the tree will look better each year than the previous year, and the recover time will still be much shorter than planting and entirely new replacement tree.

i agree ... with one caveat ... which i can not define in these pix ..

where are the power lines ???? .. how close to the tree ???? .. i can not decide the best course.. w/o having that knowledge ...

lol ... i though that was some mighty nice deer fencing.... until i realized it is a trampoline.. lol ..

We had our tree guy out today and he said save it. He recommended cutting out the fractured top aspect shape by 1/3 and cut low 2'mid crotch??? (Not sure what that means) He said it will not look the prettest tree for awhile but its in the back yard. He feels it will grow back in a few years. So I guess we will keep it. Will post pictures once the job is done.

no comment on the power lines??? is it just an optical illusion in the pic???

i like the way your tree guy keeps selling you remedies that are going to insure he has to keep coming back for his boat payment ...

what does he mean when he says: shape by 1/3 .. are you topping this one like the pear out front???? .. or is this why the power lines are not an issue????

you can tell i dont like it all .. but hey ... if you are happy.. all the power to ya .... you asked for my/our opinion ....

Power lines are far away from the tree. Fact the power company made everyone around here have their trees taken down if they were too close to the lines last summer. So many people were angery since so many trees had to go. Ours is no where near them but they look closer in the photo then they really are. As for the tree guy he suggested we keep it. For $100 I guess we will see what the end result looks like and get it trimmed.

RE: Remove this Red Maple or no

Jess, our area metro-west Boston has suffered incredible tree damage from this early freak snow storm. Almost all surrounding towns are experiencing broad power outages that are lasting for days. However, here in my town we didn't lose power for a minute!!

A nearby snooty town that has suffered days of outages and had to set up a shelter at the high school, has now decided that my town is smart for having a municipal light company, but in fact my town is smart FOR MAINTAINING THE TREES PROPERLY. This snooty town had residents complaining about the tree crews taking TOO MUCH off the trees, now the same people are complaining that they took off too little!

Gasbags should shut up and let the town do its work, if the town is willing to invest in proper maintenance. There are utilities around here that have cut corners on tree work and they're paying the price now.
