Kaki Persimmon

I was stationed in Iwakuni Japan in the 70's. One of the lasting images in my mind is that of trees bearing orange fruits well into the New Year. It seemed like every home had at least one.
For a fruit tree, Oriental Persimmons are amazingly trouble free. Very little or no pruning, no spraying, no thinning, no pollinators needed. The only problems I have is coons & possums. These trees have beautiful fall color. My favorite is 'Saijo' which is really delicious. This is 'Great Wall' which has never been known to freeze for us. Forget about what passes for persimmons in the supermarket. Do you grow Kaki Persimmons? What is your favorite?

Love 'em! We grow mostly Fuyus here...just now ripening, the tree is stunning, and once the leaves drop off the fruits decorate the bare branches like holiday ornaments as in your top photo. We eat them like apples, or sliced into salads, or sliced and grilled as a side dish.
Have never tried Saijo...will have to check it out!

Delicious, but they can't be grown here (not enough summer heat) so they have to be imported and are very expensive :-(
