Bradford estimated time left?

Here is my forsaken Bradford/Cleveland/Break apart Pear. Actually it looked decent this fall after our HOT DRY summer. Too bad it flowered soo much this spring. Stench made it difficult to tell when the kid's diaper needed changing.

Since I removed two rotting silver maples and THREE big white ash which were planted too close to the house I'm in shock and can't bring myself to take the chainsaw to another tree.

How long do you think? Location is fairly sheltered. I'm gonna place the over/under at 5 years. I see some bark getting squeezed into the trunk already.

Like a parent of a deliquent I hope mother nature removes it from the earth soon so I don't have to!

Lol

I'm gonna guess 10 years, but I still wouldn't be sitting under it in a storm.

"..kid's diaper..", "..parent of a deli(n)quent.."

next time you have the saw out.. and some spare time.. you know what to do ...

otherwise.. it will last.. as long as it will last ... windstorm.. tornadic winds.. thunderstorm.. snow storm.. but usually an ice storm.. if you get them ... how the heck do we know.. when the next act of God will happen ...

I would say 10 as well barring super storm of some sort. There are much larger ones in my area, that have somehow managed to make it through storm after storm and the worst ice storm on record. However, during that ice storm most looked like mushrooms squashed from the top.

In any event, I would think you have enough time to get something else of nice size to replace it. Tulip Tree would be a good candidate IMHO. Fast growing and long lived.

You mentioned it is sheltered. My parents have a HUGE bradford pear that is completely surrounded by even larger oaks and it hasn't dropped a branch in 10 years. All the structural branches were destroyed in the 2000 ice storm but now it has countless branches that just go straight up almost branchless originating 3-4' off the main trunk that are probably 30' or so in height.

You didn't ask (and probably don't care lol) but that spot is begging for a magnolia like 'Elizabeth' or 'Butterflies'

Well, the sooner it's gone, the sooner you can plant the RIGHT tree in that spot.

"Like a parent of a deliquent"

The delinquent was whoever planted it...or maybe the greedy nursery industry for promoting them way past the time when their problems were known.

Ditto to the above. Other differences:

Bradfor Pear flowers smell of a mixture of rotten fish and vomit
Cleveland Pear flowers smell of a mixture of vomit and rotten fish

THIS MAY BE THE FUNNIEST COMMENT I'VE EVER SEEN ON GARDENWEB. Thanks for the laugh, Resin!
