Peach borer???

What is wrong with peaches trees that have "brown jello" at the base? I was going to install winter hardware cloth and instead found A LOT of brown gelatin with some frass mixed in and a few small larvae. The white larvae are 1/3-inch with small red-brown heads. I had not seen anything on these since planting in the spring. They are not on other fruit trees. The trees are still leafed out, since it has been warm through the end of October. Foliage healthy, no pests and grew great this year. No obvious borer entry, but the gelatin is an inch above and below ground so it is hard to be sure. One spot had sappy jello oozing a foot up but was not sticky at all like pine sap.

Borer search? Suggestions? The bark at the base seemed pretty wet so I cleared the gelatin out to dry so it's not so damaging to hunt for borers.

RE: Peach borer???

hey

there is a fruit forum.. and i have never seen many of the fruit experts in the tree forum ....

the goo is gummosis ... very common in prunus ... fruit trees ....

and it is a borer... and i dont know what to do about it ... as i would use a systemic .. but for the fact that it is a food tree ...

you do need to pull back the mulch .... and expose the root flare ... perhaps about 6 inches ...

good luck .. i will look for your post over there ..

in my experience.. peach trees are very problematic in z5 ... and over the years.. i have lost many of them .. i wish you all the luck in the world ....
