When traveling in China, most trees I have seen are braced,.. not sure what to think of it, it seems a bit of overkill sometimes,..
is it really needed?

My guess is that those trees were transplanted and braced until they become somewhat established. I have seen a number of such projects in China where that was the case.

I was thinking the same thing. They probably went into the forest and and transplanted trees from there into city developments.

China has some really large scale horticultural projects going on (massive tree farms, massive plantings, etc). I don't know how wide-scale they are compared to the size of the country, but individually, at least, they can be quite impressive.
