Nuttall oak would work and is a better looking tree.

What do you think of swamp white oak?

On a strip of our backyard where water often runs during rainy parts of the year, I planted 1 nuttall oak and 1 swamp white oak. Both a beautiful trees. I'm in Zone 6b, southwestern KY.

If memory serves black gum can also handle some wet areas, and has a relative, Nyssa aquatica (tupelo) than can grow in standing water, I'm told.

Are you looking for something to tolerate a wet spot AND be at least semi-evergreen?

I saw some amazing Water Oaks in Oklahoma that were fully foliated in December.

To Hair and drrich, I have several Swamp whites and Nuttall's oaks already, and Dave, I guess if possible they would be semi-evergreen, but, really in winter it is too cold to be playing around outside in the area the tree would be in. It will be over the hill in a low spot, not seen in winter really very often. The thing is the Nigra without being closely scrutinized, looks a bit in texture (leaves) and shape as a live oak to me. I think Q. Laurafolia may too. So I was hoping for the opinion of which is the best of those 2 oaks only. Someone on here told me about a 150 year old Q. Nigra they got acorns off of. Maybe I'll go with that one. I have many Compton's oaks already, I am not sure they can take the sogginess, but the Lyrata in it's genes may help with that.
