I finally got a day to get the close-ups with good light. I shook the tree and not much fell on the paper. Well, here they are...... ![]() |

It looks greener where the homemade bunny guard is doesn't it? The pictures may make it look that way. Maybe it needs more shade? Anyway, I took soil samples, in case it's a PH or deficiency issue. The results aren't back yet. I took from the root zone of wild Eastern Hemlock up in the Mts. nearby in one sample and in the area I have planted this tree. In another note, I caught a deer trying to behead my Willow oak. It ran only after I ran at it. Yelling did nothing, and my big Newfie dog barked and ran a it, too. They beheaded my English yew and left the top on the ground next to the desecrated remains. I think they should at least eat what they bit off! The Swamp chestnut oak has some fuzz on the leaves, that may have saved it. I have some stuff to put on it tommorrow, I hope it won't be too late.

Poaks, for sure hemlock has that well-known shade tolerance. But where I see youngins of it coming up most in the wild is in little gaps in the overhead canopy. Really seems to enjoy some sun! There are numerous ones in deeper shade too but it's the ones in partial direct sun that seem to be vigorous. +oM

Chlorosis usually implicates the roots or soil. How did the roots look when you planted it. How long has it been there? Also, don't keep in bondage. If it needs staking, give it room to move. tj P.S. Try to keep things in one thread or at the very least link to the old thread.

It took me forever to get a good pic so I thought putting a new thread would call attention to something new instead of the old Earthquake pics. I have my soil sample results back and the PH in my soil is more acid than the wild EASTERN Hemlocks soil, but I have WESTERN Hemlock. It has been in the ground since this past spring. The Forest farm catalog where I bought it from doesn't specify ACID/ ALKALINE Etc. My soil ph for the soil in the rootball and surrounding area of my WESTERN Hemlockin my yard is 6.0, my soil sample from the dripline and surrounding area of wild EASTERN Hemlock up the mountains is 7.4. The Hemlocks are very nice and green. The mountain EASTERN Hemlocks soil is extremely high in CALCIUM. Both soil samples were below optimum in PHOS,POT,and MAG, but mine were closeer to optimum than our mountains soil. There was no recommendation of calcium addition, I'm assuming because it may over-alkali the soil. I may try GYPSUM. I have heard it won't make the soil any higher in PH if applied. I would leave things be but that mountain soil had CALCIUM levels so high it was off the page across to the end of the page. If I get time I'll ask the soil forum peeps too.

Poak, if you like, take a look at the USDA Plant Database pages for western hemlock. A google search will easily turn this page up. Great information. Probably more than the average person wants. Just mentioning this because I've made great use of these pages-across a huge spectrum of plant types-over the years. +oM
