Snow damage to Star Magnolia.

So, after the recent freak snowstorm in October, I thought my magnolia trees had not been damaged. Ironically, the Southern Magnolias were fine but the deciduous, northern, Star Magnolia was damaged. I love this tree! If I cut the damaged branches, will it recuperate and eventually develop a more balanced form? This poor tree puts up with so much--it's been repeatedly rutted by deer over the years and still looked great--until last week. Thanks in advance.

With almost no information and no picture, it's REAL hard to tell anything about it.

all broken branches need to be PROPERLY pruned off ... w/o a picture.. we cant really provide any more specific info ...

with no insult to the root system.. there is no reason for your plant NOT to explode with growth, due to the reduction of the canopy .. and no root damage ...

it will probably need some selective pruning over the next few years ... to train it back into a nice shape..

but one thing for sure.. FORGET WHAT IT USED TO LOOK LIKE ... it will never be that again .. and look forward to what it will look like in the future ...

if you need help with proper pruning techniques... post a picture... and we can be more precise ... see link

good luck
