Tree of the year awards?

Its that time of year to be picking the best of the last 365 days.

Anyone aware of any Conifer Society plants of the year? Or Acer Palmatum of honors for us to be excited about? Any record industry type sales records indicating what is the most commonly sold patented plant?

The Society of Municipal Arborists (urban forestry association) voted on the Accolade Elm as the 2011 TOY. Other than that, I am only aware of regional recognitions.

A plant that has been around for almost 90 years is tree of the year in 2011?

The American Conifer Society Collectors Conifers of the year for 2012 are Sciadopitys verticillata 'Picola', Cedrus libani var. brevifolia 'Kenwith' and Picea abies 'Wichtel'. All of these are either very dwarf or miniature selections. These are not based on sales but, rather, on what the ACS determines to be good plants to offer their members.
