hey ...

you have a real theme going here .. 2 posts on empresses ... whats that all about ...

first.. you have to get past common names.. and find the latin.. since most info on the web .. the best info .... is under such..

i googled your common name.. and came up with the name at the link .. with much info.. and if you flip to the IMAGES side ... you can see large specimens of your plant ... and this will give you an idea of its potential . .. nothing really stops growing at some magical height ... perhaps add 'annual growth rate' to the latin name on the google page.. and you will get the range suggested by various sources ...

the issue is PROPER PLANTING.. and frankly.. if properly planted.. wind is irrelevant.. short of hurricane ... plants are supposed to blow in the wind ... but not rock themselves out of the ground.. so once they get 'established' .. once they get over the fact that you moved it to a new home ... then afterwards.. wind should not mean anything ... [as compared to MI winter wind.. where its zero degrees with a 40 mph blistering wind in january ... but we are not talking about that in z8 NC]

but part of that is also the size of the plant .. you are planting ... if you are planting a large plant.. then it needs some wind protection ... staking .. until its roots can grab hold.. and hold it in place ... obviously.. a smaller plant would not need as much protection regarding such ... 2 years is about what it should take the roots .. all things done properly ...

below is a link to a planting guide ... paste it into your browser ...

good luck

Is empress of china the same as cornus controversa? or is it the evergreen cornus augustina?

Cornus.controversa I have and have seen a decent sized one of. I would bet 40' wide by 30' tall

not to be all technical Ken but its scientific name not latin name. Scientific names can also be in Greek and various other archaic languages.
