About 6 weeks ago I planted a few Summers Red Maple trees, container grown, about 5 feet tall. Did not stake them. Some crazy wind has blown through since then, including what became Hurricane Sandy, and I've noticed that one of them is leaning slightly, less than 30 degrees, but it's certainly no longer straight up and down. Should I stake the tree or let it remain as is, hoping that over time this slight lean won't make a difference. There's no danger of this tree ever falling on a house, if that matters.

hey i would re-dig it ... on the side away from the lean .. underdig just a little.. and reset it straight ... AND THEN STAKE IT .. its only been 6 weeks since planting ... why not ... what is your base soil type ... in my sand.. i would never need a stake ... especially on a tree that has no leaves ... but in bad clay ... perhaps you need one ... [i see at your members page.. you are cursed with red clay .... my condolences.. ] also.. if you really want to get the the bottom of this.. what did you do at planting ... did you do much of anything beyond just yanking it out of the pot.. and sticking it in the hole.. soil amendments??? if there were any mistakes ... there should be no reason.. they all couldnt be fixed.. this time of year. .. subject to me not knowing anything about z8 ... lol .. including digging it up.. and doing it properly ... is the tree fully dormant??? ok you southern clay peeps.. suggestions??? ken

Clay is a mixed blessing. Dug a hole 3x as wide as the container, just a few inches deeper. Placed the tree in the hole on a slight mound and filled the whole back with the same soil I dug out, minus a handful of rocks I picked out. Mulched with about 3" of shredded hardwood. Not sure I want to dig it up, it's been at least six weeks and the weather has been so warm. I'm going to take a photo later today and see what you think. Thanks.

was it severely pot-bound???? any root surgery ... regardless ... its a maple.. it probably wont care ... just underdig it enough to pull it back vertical.. refill hole.. stomp it in good ... and then stake it ... ken
