| Hello!
I am very fond of Castaneas. The most favorite is Castanea sativa. But, I live in Estonia, and my hardiness zone is 6a (maybe 5b). I have heard from everywhere, that Castaneas don't survive in Estonia because we have so harsh winter but actually we don't (my opinion). They also say that Castanea's hardiness zone is 6-7, but I have read that it is 4. May I grow him in Estonia? And will it grow in Estonia? We have an oceanic climate here in Estonia (next to Baltic Sea) Thank you!!! |

| Hi nelumbo, I don't know about C sativa, but C dentata will grow where it's colder. I am in Canada and it grows here. Some seed lots do better than others, so it would be good to get seed from colder areas as they are more likely to grow. C mollissima from colder areas might be OK too, as I have some here. My trees are too young to bear yet, but if you don't get any seed nuts in a few years, you can remind me and I could send you some. Some of mine have 5 growing seasons, so it shouldn't be too long till they bear. Jocelyn, PEI, Canada |

| Yea you could grow Castanea dentata (American Chestnut). Would definately surive your zone and maybe even colder. Mature trees are hard to find where it is native (Eastern U.S.) bcause almost all have been killed by the blight. The hybrids trees (American Chestnut x Chinese Chestnuts) seem to be resistant and are just has hardy as the its american parent. Really nice tree, sweet nuts and valuable woood. The tree can reach over 100 feet tall and 17 feet in diameter. |
