The answers I need are local but I would like to hear of your experiences. We are not asking about the public people like streets and utilities but rather private trimmers who do back yard stuff. Where do you check on the credentials and reputations of tree trimmers? Do the tree trimming services you know about or use have insurance? Who pays if they drop a tree-limb through your roof? Who pays if the tree trimmer himself falls through you roof? ed [ To add to the problem, the property is in Nevada. There may not be enough trees in the state to keep tree trimmers from going hungry.] ed [After typing the above it occurred to me that the property is 44 minutes, according the Google, from South Lake Tahoe, Ca which should have tree trimmers but then we have the across state line problems.] ed - [ And. we really want tree removal, not tree trimming. And we would like them to leave the chips.]

You need to check with your municipal government to see if there are licensing requirement. (which usually requires proof of insurance) If there are, they will usually verify if someone is licensed over the phone. If you're completely new to having this done, you should read through various thread here about some of the problems people have had. (you will find the search box near the bottom of the list of topics in any forum) Be careful. Some of this tradesmen will try to sell you more trimming than you really need.

the key to piece of mind ... is insurance ... ask to see their policy.. they should have it in the truck .. and i will yell... CALL THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO INSURE THAT IT IS A 'CURRENT' POLICY ... on the date of service .. include work comp as well as other liabilities ... why is this an issue??? ... having trouble sleeping at night.. lol ... give us some more precise facts about your circumstances.. and we can give you more precise suggestions ... get at least 3 estimates .. cheaper is not always better ...and the same goes for the most expensive ... is there access for a bucket truck.. into the yard.. or will this all be monkey work .. climbing and roping ... its quite an entertaining event ... well.. for me anyway .. lol .. i figure if i am going to pay good money.. i want a show.. but i dont want to sit there on the edge of a coronary during the show... like the first copy/paste link below ... and simply ask .. to 'see' them actually doing a similar job ... you will quickly be able to tell.. who knows what they are doing .... and when all else fails.. pay thru the nose.. and use a national firm like davey tree .. or drat.. i just blanked ... the other one.. lol ... wright???? piece of mind.. is worth.. what you pay for it.. you might also try youtube ... see link below .... to 'see' such.. but try not to watch the failure versions.. your head might explode ... but if you do ... you will quickly note.. THEY ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS ... the ones who fail i mean ... one last thing.. if you garden.. and you use wood chips.. dont let them drive away with chips.. and then go buy chips for your garden.. but ask for 'all wood' chips ... ken read the comments on this one .. perhaps you dont want these guys .. i mean really.. that guy in the bobcat would have been crushed like an ant.. no ear protection.. crimminey ....: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f15fxSv3uw and this one ... is the bucket truck and monkey version ... note each piece is hand dropped.. or roped .... made into small manageable pieces.. before it falls.. unlike the one above.. idiots ... as i said.. just watching.. you can tell a lot about how much they know ...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRvEbN-gsBU

As an arborist that lives in Los Angeles, CA area I would tell you that when you are looking for a tree service make sure they are ISA certified. No need to call the state and start looking into insurance and other stuff like that. If you are getting red flags from a service when you meet them maybe look into it. ISA certified tree services have wen through rigorous testing on tree standards and will almost 100% of the have insurance and have years of experience. Most important thing to ask a tree service. How many years have you been doing this? It will tell you a lot about a tree service. The smaller companies often have more risk and do a better job then the big companies just based on sure experience.
